Facial plastic surgery may do more than help you appear younger. Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center found that individuals who underwent some sort of facial rejuvenation were perceived as more likable—emphasizing the role that facial rejuvenation can play in facial profiling. Study Says
Highlighting the importance of facial profiling, the study examined, evaluated, and quantified the perceived changes in personality post rejuvenation. In total, 173 participants (110 women, 63 men) viewed photos of 30 women previous to and after facial rejuvenation surgery. The women underwent one or more procedures in the form of facelifts, upper or lower eye lifts, brow lifts, neck lift, or chin implants.
Participants were asked to assess the women’s appearance in relation to a variety of personality traits including aggressiveness, extroversion, likeability, trustworthiness, risk seeking, social skill, attractiveness, and femininity. Of these traits, the women who underwent facial plastic surgery were perceived as more likeable, attractive, to possess better social skills, and appeared more feminine than previous to their operations. Post-surgery, the women did not appear as aggressive as they had previously.
Researchers thus concluded that “facial plastic surgery changes the perception of patients by those around them.”
