What Is Chin Surgery?

Also known as mentoplasty, chin surgery typically involves placing an implant to enhance chin shape and size. Chin surgery has a wide appeal because it offers:

  • Improved facial balance
  • A relatively short recovery
  • Permanent results

Am I A Chin Surgery Candidate?

Many adults are excellent chin surgery candidates. As with any procedure, it is necessary to attend an in-person consultation to find out if chin surgery is appropriate for you. You can learn about your candidacy without making any upfront commitments by scheduling a complimentary consultation at our practice.

During your initial visit to Artisan Aesthetics Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, Dr. Castor will listen to your goals for chin surgery. You can also expect him to examine your facial structure and ask about your relevant medical history. From there, he will determine if this procedure is right for you.

You may choose to undergo chin surgery to correct concerns such as:

  • A weak or recessed chin
  • Chin asymmetry
  • An overly large or wide chin
  • An unbalanced facial profile
  • Excess fat below the chin

It’s also somewhat common for rhinoplasty patients to pursue this procedure. That is because chin size and shape can affect our perception of the nose. For some people, thoughtful adjustments to both facial features are the best way to achieve the desired result.

Chin Surgery Techniques

Dr. Castor performs two main types of chin surgery: augmentation and reduction. Augmentation is carried out using a silicone implant that is specially designed for you. An incision will be made either on the inside of your mouth or under your chin. Dr. Castor will then place the implant within a small pocket in the underlying tissue and close your incisions. Your chin implant is created to last a lifetime, but it can be easily removed or revised if you choose to change its appearance later on.

Meanwhile, reduction surgery involves Vaser liposuction to remove excess fat on the chin pad. The area under the chin can also be liposuctioned to remove excess fat and tighten the skin along the jawline. This procedure can help elongate the chin and jawline to give an improved side profile.

Keep in mind that these techniques are performed under general anesthesia from the comfort of our onsite state-accredited office surgical suite. Surgery time can vary from 30 minutes to upwards of two hours.

Chin Surgery Recovery And Results

Chin surgery is usually an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home the same day. You can expect to experience some manageable and temporary discomfort. The average patient chooses to take a week off work. After two weeks, you should be able to resume most of your normal activities.

Chin surgery results are permanent. You should expect to enjoy your new look for years to come, though aging will affect your appearance. View our chin implant before and after gallery to see what Dr. Castor has achieved for other patients.
