What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentationBreast augmentation is a surgical procedure that is primarily intended to increase the size of your breasts, although it may also improve their symmetry. It typically uses implants to achieve this goal, although patients who only want a modest increase in breast volume may opt for transferring fat to the breasts from another part of the body. Good candidates for breast augmentation are already at a stable, healthy weight and believe that a larger bust will improve their overall body shape and proportion.

Materials

The choice of materials for breast implants is usually between saline and silicone. Saline implants are less expensive, but they also carry the risk of developing ripples. The biggest advantage of saline is that it’s easy to fill the implants with additional fluid after the surgery. This benefit is particularly useful for patients undergoing breast reconstruction following a mastectomy.

Silicone is more viscous, giving it a thicker consistency than saline. As a result, silicone is much less prone to rippling and leakage. In addition, the greater viscosity means that silicone implants hold their original shape more effectively.

Position

The position of breast implants may generally be sub-glandular or submuscular. Subglandular implants are placed above the muscle and are typically used for women with thick skin and some fatty breast tissue. This position prevents the implants from moving when the pectoral muscles are contracted, making it preferred by athletes and bodybuilders.

Submuscular implants are placed under the pectoral muscles. This position makes the implants appear more natural while the pectoral muscles are stationary, but they will move when these muscles are contracted.

Recovery

Most patients can return to work within a week after the surgery, although a complete recovery will take longer. Physical exertion may be difficult during this time, especially if it involves the pectoral muscles. You should wait at least six weeks after the surgery before getting new bras to ensure the implants are in their final position. In the meantime, wear a sports bra that opens in the front and avoid underwire bras.
